THREE Blackburn teachers are heading across the Atlantic on a research trip - to one of the world's most prestigious universities.
The staff from St Wilfrid's CE High School and Technology College are hoping to find the key to recruiting and retaining teachers, improving performance in schools, and teacher development. So they are off to Stanford University in California - on a par with Harvard, Yale, Oxford and Cambridge.
For globetrotting researcher Steve Merrill, 51, of Croston, assistant head teacher at St Wilfrid's, this is the second long-haul trip in two years. He was invited to an inaugural International Conference of Education in Honolulu in January last year with colleague Alan Child.
Mr Merrill said: "We are hoping to find some good new ideas about how to improve aspects of education and bring them back to Blackburn."
The trio, who fly on Saturday, also includes deputy head Helen Reece, 44, of Abbey Village, and assistant head Catherine Huddleston, 39, of Lancaster. It has been funded by Teachers Sabbatical, a funding strand from the Department for Education and Skills.
