A SPECIALIST stroke facility is the centrepiece of a new multi-million pound medical rehabilitation unit which will open today at Royal Preston Hospital.
The new hospital block will be home to some of the services transferring from Sharoe Green Hospital which will close later this year.
The two-storey £6 million centre will house 62-beds with 18 on a dedicated stroke ward which features specialist equipment and staff trained in rehabilitating stroke patients.
The unit will aid the recovery of patients requiring rehabilitation who have a range of medical, surgical, orthopaedic and neurological conditions including strokes, Parkinson's disease, chronic chest conditions and fractures.
Around 150 staff will be based at the unit including teams of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapy staff, speech and language therapists and dieticians.
The new building also features a special day hospital to care for between 40 and 55 outpatients a day who need extra rehabilitation.
Tony Curtis, chief executive of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, said: "I am delighted that the first of the major new developments will open its doors to patients."
