I AM writing to condemn my fellow north west MEP, Lib Dem Chris Davies, as a hypocrite for attacking the level of post office closures while refusing to be open about his own policy, which is to privatise the Post Office as soon as possible.

The policy passed at the most recent Lib Dem conference states: "We are increasingly coming to the view that a privatised Post Office . . . on Dutch lines could have a better chance of succeeding than the current structure".

Of course, the plan to flog-off the Post Office was only the tip of the Lib Dem iceberg. In January, when the European Parliament voted on the future of public services, Chris Davies voted for the most extreme pro-privatisation positions on the agenda. He endorsed:

Refusing to investigate the safety implications of further privatisation;

The idea that privatisation of all services had delivered better services for the public;

The privatisation of the BBC.

It is no wonder that the Lib Dems prefer to talk about Iraq and not the real issues in this election campaign. Their policies are extreme and bizarre in equal measure.
