TRIBUTES have poured in this morning following the death of Blackburn with Darwen's Mayor, Coun Michael Barrett.

Coun Barrett, councillor for Earcroft ward in Darwen, who became mayor in May 2003, had been suffering with kidney problems for some months and had been in and out of hospital.

He passed away earlier today in his sleep.

Council leader Sir Bill Taylor said: "This is a very sad day for me both as a council leader and also personally. I've known Michael for 25 years.

"He was an exceptionally devoted councillor who gave everything to his role and was an exceptionally loving man.

"I'm sure he'll be remembered as someone who gave his all trying to help others."

Colin Rigby, leader of the Conservative Party at the council, said: "I have respect for Michael both as a man and a politician. He always tried to help those who otherwise wouldn't have a voice.

"My sympathies go out to his family at this time."

Council chief executive Phil Watson added: "This is very sad news for everybody who has known Michael. As a result of this news we have now cancelled the election in Earcroft ward where both he and his wife Moira were due to stand as Labour councillors.

"The European election in Earcroft will still take place and a by-election will be called within 35 days."
