MORE traffic calming measures are to be introduced on one of Radcliffe's busiest accident blackspots.

Warning signs, hatched markings and Textureflex surfacing have already been added to Bolton Road in a bid to slow traffic.

Now five pedestrian refuges will be installed along the stretch to allow people to cross to the centre before continuing to the other side.

Coun Barry Briggs, chairman of Radcliffe Area Board, said: "The work is being done in recognition of the number of accidents that have happened in this area. It is hoped that the scheme will reduce the number of accidents, but it will be under review, and we will take necessary action in the future if it is necessary."

Between 2000 and 2002, 32 accidents were recorded on the route and Bury Council held a public consultation at the end of last year which showed that 98 per cent of residents felt that action should be taken to make Bolton Road safer.

In February, 15-year-old Natalie Danielle Pickwick Jones, of Olsberg Close, Radcliffe, died after she was in collision with a Toyota MR2 in Bolton Road.

The latest accident occurred at about 2.30am on Saturday when a car collided with a parked car and a garden wall.

A passenger in a Ford Sierra was cut from the wreckage by firefighters and taken to Fairfield General Hospital with a suspected punctured lung.

The driver (28) and another passenger suffered minor injuries.
