A POPULAR town centre bar was badly damaged in a blaze early today.

The bar area of Baroque, in Northgate, Blackburn, was affected after an electical fault on a fridge at 3.45am.

Firefighters said the venue was saved from more severe damage because it had a alarm.

An automatic fire door prevented the smoke from damaging other parts of the building.

A man asleep on the third floor was also alerted by the alarm and managed to walk to safety.

Station Officer Aidan Fortune said: "It was quite a severe fire.

"There was considerable amount of smoke drifting over the road.

"All the precautions did work, but the bar will not be reopened until it has been redecorated."
