YET another serious road accident on Water Street, Radcliffe on Friday evening must prompt the traffic planners to look urgently at this busy section of the A665. Speeding, as always, is the main problem.

For many drivers, the sight of four lanes is the signal to accelerate. This is often the case as traffic comes up Pilkington Way and, as it leaves the traffic lights at the old town hall junction of Spring Lane and Lord Street, speeds off towards Ainsworth Road and Bolton Road. This is particularly the case at off-peak times, when traffic conditions allow for speeding.

The considerable amount of housing development in the Water Street area in recent years has added much traffic to surrounding streets. Lord Street is the only access for cars into these streets and drivers are faced with a dangerous wait in the middle of the four lanes in order to make that right turn.

I have to use this manoeuvre several times a week, and it is truly nerve-racking, with oncoming drivers accelerating to well above 30mph as they charge towards you.

Much work has been done on Bolton Road to curb speeding, but the planners must now turn their attention nearer to the town centre, to the four lanes along Water Street.
