FIVE post offices are to close their doors for good in a bid to throw other branches a lifeline.
Newton post office in Langdale Place, Lancaster, will be the first to shut up shop on July 7.
It will be followed by post offices on Owen Road, Skerton, Lancaster Road, Torrisholme, and Beaufort Road, Morecambe, on July 10.
Balmoral Post Office, Morecambe, closes on July 13.
The closures follow a public consultation of residents and MPs.
"We received a number of representations, a petition and a meeting was held," says Eddie Herbert, Post Office area head.
"The main concerns were about the effects of the closure on the elderly and convenience of nearby, alternative branches."
But he says he believes the permanent closure of the five offices is the 'correct' action.
"Proposals to close post offices are not made without considerable research. The harsh reality is that many urban offices are struggling to survive because there are too many branches for the amount of business," he adds.
