SIXTY-FIVE fire fighters are still battling to stop a blaze at a scrap metal yard spreading to homes this morning (Friday).

Fire broke out at 3.20am at Morecambe Metals on White Lund, Morecambe. Smoke filled the air and people living nearby were warned to close their windows and doors.

Eight crews, including Morecambe and Lancaster were at the scene as thousands of tonnes of scrap metal blazed.

Retained crews from Bolton-le-Sands, Carnforth, Hornby and Silverdale were also tackling the inferno

The surrounding area was closed off and police were diverting traffic away from the industrial estate.

Speaking at 7.30 this morning, Station Officer Tony Burscough, of Lancaster, told the Citizen the fire was still causing big concern.

"At the present time it is still on fire and there is a lot of smoke. It is taking time to put out because of the sheer size and the fact it is a deep-seated fire

He says the cause of the fire is still being investigated but says that when the first two fire appliances from Lancaster and Morecambe arrived a large amount of reclaimed materials on fire.

The crew was stepped up to four and at present fire crews from Fulwood and Burnley are also at the scene.

No-one is thought to have been injured in the blaze.
