FAST motors around the globe are revving up to compete against Lancaster University's very own Formula race car.
Designed and built by 11 master's degree engineering students, the lightweight, single-seater boasts a Yamaha 600cc engine with the power to reach 110mph and 0-60 in 3.6 seconds.
The car will compete against 125 others at Bruntingthorpe proving ground, near Leicester, from July 9 to 11, for £10,000 in prizes and the chance to race in America.
But as the Lancaster team gears up for action, members are desperately seeking sponsorship towards the £20,000 cost of the car.
James Rowley, project co-ordinator, says teams have previously enjoyed backing from a major sponsor with links to the university - but that company ended its support after moving.
While the engineering department forks out a significant sum, the students still need £5,000.
Half of their degree is dependent on the car, leaving them little choice but to raid the pot for next year's car to finance their own.
The team is seeking sponsorship for essential spare parts, team uniforms, accommodation and food during the event. They are also appealing for raffle prizes to help raise funds.
The event promises to attract national and international publicity - sponsors' names could be featured on the car, uniforms and all marketing material.
