RUSSELL Mills does well to ridicule the rusty iron that has been dumped on Morecambe promenade (Letters, last week) but falls short in his comments on its inaccuracy...

A panorama should give the viewer an accurate picture of what is before him (or her). This monstrous erection is neither art nor science.

Let me point out some of the more glaring errors that would confuse the Viking invaders.

The Furness shore of the bay runs roughly parallel to the Morecambe to Heysham dir-ection and so points along the coast should be seen in the same proportion as depicted by the Ordnance Survey. Barrow to Bardsea should, therefore, appear more than twice the distance of Bardsea to Ulverston - but shows it at about one sixth.

Grassmoor, away in West Cumbria, if at all visible should peep over the top of Dow Crag (Coniston group) and Haycock over Illgill Head with Hard Knott in a similar direction. Hawkshead Moor is over-shadowed by Monk Coniston and not within walking distance of Helvellyn.

Even poor Wainwright would have got lost if he had to take notice of Lan-caster City Council. I spent most of my life mapping Cumbria and it grieves me to find that my accuracy is not appreciated.

There's much to be learned if you want to impress visitors.

Tom Goodwin, Morecambe.
