PUPILS will be encouraged to score higher in their lessons this week - with lesson plans designed around Euro 2004.

The Government is sending out advice to East Lancashire schools about how best to weave football themes into lessons for the youngsters.

That means school-goers will be shouting for the French by tackling the national anthem not least so they can understand the dulcet tones of Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry in France's next match against Croatia later this week.

Lesson plans also suggest learning the shortest way to Lisbon in geography lessons, creating meal plans based on national dishes, mini-Euro 2004 sports competitions in PE and learning more about other cultures.

Education minister Stephen Twigg wants schools to download the information from the internet.
