SIX men escape their daily toil in the pit by getting together at night to sing.

This simple idea is the basis for what is a guaranteed night to remember.

The Glee Club is a heartwarming, poignant and hugely enjoyable production that deservedly received one of loudest and longest ovations on an opening night at the Octagon for a very long time.

Like the fictitious South Yorkshire village it is set in, the Glee Club is earthy, boisterous and at times not for the faint-hearted. The comrades in song share a common bond. But their friendships are put to the test when they begin to realise one has a secret.

First-rate acting, a great script - and some fine songs thrown in make for a magical blend.

If you go expecting some kind of Full Monty then think again (although there's far more nudity than you will ever get in that particular show). The Glee Club is raw, full on, highly-charged entertainment which wrings out every emotion.

The six-strong cast are as strong an ensemble as you could wish for. After Bolton The Glee Club heads off on tour. My advice is to catch it now before it ends up back in the West End, where it deserves to be.

The Glee Club runs until Saturday, July 3. Details from the box office on 01204 520661
