WORK is under way to give an Accrington church a facelift, bringing a children's centre to one of the area's deprived wards.

Half-a-million pounds is to be spent transforming Christ Church, which dates back to 1840, after the church teamed up with children's agency Sure Start.

The building, on Christ Church Square, Barnfield, has had its stained glass windows protected by boards for years.

And the vicar admits the building might look closed to outsiders.

But now workmen have moved onto the site, and Sure Start is set to base an 'outreach centre' at the church, with childcare and training facilities for local adults.

The Rev Kevin Logan said: "We have been in long negotiations with Sure Start over the last two-and-a-half years and are delighted to be able to work with them to improve much-needed care for children.

"There is a great need in the area in South Accrington, and it's part of the church's job to work alongside all who are concerned with the welfare of human beings, especially the younger ones."

Funding for the work, which is hoped to be completed by Christmas, has come from Sure Start itself, and from European sources.

Sure Start Hyndburn is the local wing of a national body.

It supports families and parents with children up to four years old, providing education, health advice and support.

Under the scheme, a training facility, creche and play area will be built.
