MAGISTRATES have sentenced a council tax doger to a month in jail.
It is the first time since 1999 that Rawtenstall Magistrates have imposed a custodial sentance for non payment of council tax.
The court heard how David Read, 57, of East Parade, Rawtenstall, owed Rossendale Borough Council £1,800 in unpaid payments.
Read was sentenced to serve 28 days imprisonment at Preston Prison on Wednesday.
Rossendale Borough Council Revenues Manager Paul Coit said: "This decision will send a message out to the residents of Rossendale, that Rossendale Borough Council takes the matter of non payment very seriously.
"If anyone has any problems with payment of council tax then I would urge them to contact the councils recovery section to discuss the matter to avoid action like this being taken."
