AN estate group is appealing to residents to get stuck in and help make the second community festival a roaring success.

Higher Folds Residents' Association members are also seeking a band to lead the parade on Sunday, August 22.

Chairman, Jacquie Farrington, said: "We want to raise the spirits of the people on the estate.

"We are trying to build a better community spirit in the area and want people of all ages to lend a helping hand.

"We organised the first festival last year and it was a success, but we are hoping to go one better this year.

"We last had a carnival queen in 1986, but this year the parade will be led by a queen, two princesses and a pageboy, and we would be delighted if a band could offer their services. So far we have been unable to find one free on the day."

The busy residents' group organise numerous fund raising activities and profits from the festival will be put back into the estate.

The aim this year is to provide two kick walls on the village green opposite the shops and at the community centre. Hopefully these will be used by children and stop them kicking balls against buildings.

But plans are also afoot to help older residents and a coffee morning has been organised on July 28 at St Gabriel's.

Former Mayor and estate resident Jimmy Jones and ex-group chairman June Cunningham have been invited to join the Mayor, Cllr John Hilton, at the event.
