ACCRINGTON Stanley manager John Coleman is expecting to run the rule over Gambian international Baboucarr Njie this week.

The pacy striker, who recently represented Gambia in World Cup 2006 qualifying matches, began a trial with the Reds in their 1-1 draw at home to Crewe Alexandra last night.

Njie was recommended to Coleman after setting up home in Bury and was brought on as a 54th minute substitute for Steve Flitcroft.

Coleman said: "A Manchester United scout put me on to him and brought him down.

"He's living in Bury now, so we'll have a look at him. Hopefully he'll be training with us this week."

Meanwhile, the Reds chief looks set to hold discussions with former York City goalkeeper Mark Ovendale after an assured display during his trial last night.

Stanley have been forced to look elsewhere for a new stopper after their bid to land Australian Jason Petkovic fell through due to a failed work permit application and Coleman said he couldn't risk waiting to see if the club could appeal.

However, the door has not been closed on central defender Ian Hughes.

The former Blackpool and Huddersfield player was not offered a contract after a three-week trial with Stanley but Coleman said: "We've had a chat with Ian and, as it stands now we haven't offered him anything.

"But we're not saying we're not going to offer him anything.

"Ian's gone away to consider some other options."
