THE Holcombe Village Society are taking their campaign against speeding motorists to Westminster.

Members of the society will be out in the village drumming up support for their call to improve safety for local residents.

Dr Falmai Binns said: "We have been asking for something to be done for four years to slow drivers who use the road as a rat run to the motorway. Tomorrow we will be asking people to sign a petition which we will present to our MP, David Chaytor."

Dr Binns said pedestrians, particularly those who are visiting the village and were not aware of the traffic problem, were most at risk near the Shoulder of Mutton pub.

"We would like the footpath round the Shoulder of Mutton widened and maybe have a give way sign so traffic on one side has to wait for other cars to pass," explained Dr Binns.

She added: "Because there have been no fatal accidents the police or the council cannot do anything. We hope that Mr Chaytor will be able to help.

"In this day and age we should be pro-active and not wait until someone is killed before action is taken."

Requests for traffic calming measures such as speed cameras have been turned down at Ramsbottom and Tottington area boards by council officials because the area does not meet the "criteria" set to justify their use.

Local people will be petitioning all day tomorrow and Sunday and local people wishing to help should contact 01706 821839.
