IF there's one club Bury have traded players with more than any in recent years, it has to be Huddersfield Town.

The connection goes back to the bad hair days of the 1970s, when promising youngsters Brian Stanton and Malcolm Brown headed off to Leeds Road.

In the 80s Liam Robinson and Peter Butler came the opposite way and in the 90s the Neil Warnock connection brought over Sam Collins and Ian Lawson, as well as the likes of Darren Bullock and Chris Billy, who played under the Sheffield United manager during his time with the Terriers.

This summer the tradition has been upheld with Jon Newby and Dwayne Mattis arriving over the Pennines from the McAlpine Stadium.

Newby needs no introduction to Bury fans. The former Liverpool striker, a self-confessed Shakers fan, had a miserable time in Yorkshire after leaving Gigg Lane last summer and was only too glad to get an invitation to return by boss Graham Barrow.

Meanwhile, for 23-year-old Mattis, the move to the Shakers is a chance to kick-start his career again after finding himself out of favour with boss Peter Jackson.

A box-to-box midfielder, who is expected to make a big impression in the coming months, the Huddersfield-born lad represented the Republic of Ireland in every age group from Under-16 to Under-21.

He sees the move to Gigg Lane as a positive one.

"This is a big move for me," he declared.

"At 23 I'm still only young in footballing terms but I have a lot of first team games under my belt.

"Peter Jackson didn't pick me last season when the club got promoted and said that he thought I'd benefit from a move, which is fair enough.

"You have to have ambition in this game and I was delighted to join Bury and have been very impressed from what I've seen of the club so far.

"Graham (Barrow) and Kelham (O'Hanlon) give you all the help you need on the training ground.

"Nothing is too much trouble and they are prepared to stay back and help you if there is something you want to work on.

"Graham has explained that this season he wants me to get into the box and score my share of goals and hopefully I'll be able to oblige."

Mattis has already been on the scoresheet with a goal in an impressive display against a strong Blackburn Rovers team.

And his manager - who rang him on holiday to ask him in for talks - has full confidence in his new acquisition being a crowd favourite with the Shakers fans.

"Dwayne is a different type of midfielder to the players we already have here," explained Barrow.

"He played a lot of first team games under three different managers at Huddersfield but fell out of favour last season.

"His style is very similar to Jason Jarrett and I'm sure our fans will warm to him, he's a strong, fit lad with bags of ability."

And the man who followed him to Bury, Newby also had words of praise for him.

"Dwayne is a good player but didn't get a look in last season for some reason," he said.

"He'll go all day for you from box to box and makes some superb runs.

"He did really well in the game against Blackburn and chipped in with a great goal."

As for the man himself, he's confident that it can be a season of success with his new club.

"From the first day I walked into the club all the lads made me welcome, as Jon Newby was the only person I knew," he said.

"I'd had offers to go to other clubs but Bury were the only team I wanted to join.

"It's crucial for us to get off to a good start and we must make sure we are a difficult side to beat.

"If we can take the organisation and fighting spirit we have shown in some of the friendly games into the league then I can see us doing well."
