A TEENAGER behind bars for 12 months after a "vicious attack" which left a student with serious multiple injuries has been told he must serve the full term.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, put his victim in hospital suffering facial injuries, bruises and swelling and with a footprint on his forehead.

The 17-year-old student could not open one of his eyes, had loosened teeth and his mouth was full of dried blood when medics attended to him. A doctor who treated him said the student had suffered a "vicious and horrible assault".

The 16-year-old had appealed against the 12 months detention and training order, imposed by Hyndburn Youth Court, at Burnley Crown Court.

Dismissing his appeal, Judge Stuart Baker, sitting with youth two justices, said the attack had been severe and unprovoked.

The 16-year-old, from Accrington, had been convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm and possessing ecstasy tablets in March by the lower court.

Arthur Stuttard, for the Crown, told the court the victim had been to Accrington Superbowl when he was subjected to the "sickening " attack.

Martin Hackett, for the 16-year-old, said the attack warranted custody but the 12 months was excessive.

The 16-year-old had acted out of character, pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and was very sorry for what he had done.

Mr Hackett added the appellant was ashamed of himself.
