AN axeman and two other raiders, one armed with a knife, robbed security guards delivering cash to a post office.

At approximately 11.20am on Friday a three-man gang approached a van delivering cash to the post office in Car Bank Street, Atherton and threatened the guards.

They stole a quantity of money then sped away in a 'K' registered maroon Vauxhall Cavalier which had been stolen about an hour earlier from the car park of Focus Do It All; alongside Tyldesley Road in Hindsford.

The Cavalier was abandoned on a passageway behind Car Bank Street and Cross Street. From here they are believed to have transferred to a silver Vauxhall Vectra with 53 in the registration plate.

No one was injured in the incident.

The man carrying the axe has been described as 5ft 10in to 6ft tall and of stocky build. The man armed with the knife was slimmer and smaller than him. Both armed men were white and wore black balaclavas and dark jackets.

Detective Sergeant Dean Fraser of the CID based at Leigh said: "This was a terrifying incident that has left the staff extremely shaken.

"It happened in broad daylight so we would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact us.

"And likewise if anyone who may have seen a group of men stealing the Cavalier or acting suspiciously.
