A teenager is hoping he can make the grade after impressing a host of North West clubs.

And his manager believes others in the community could follow in his footsteps if more played in local Sunday leagues.

Thirteen-year-old Jamil Adam has completed trials for Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers and with Manchester United and Liverpool also expressing an interest.

The youngster, from Great Lever in Bolton, has also netted the 'Under 13's Player of the Year Award 2004' from the Bolton Boys' and Girls' Federation. Managers from some of the federation's 123 teams voted to award Jamil the accolade on the basis of his ability as a player and his personality.

Jamil, attacking centre forward for Bolton Lads' and Girls' Club Under 13s team, has been playing football for the club for the last three years under the guidance of Bolton Lads and Girls' Under 13s team manager Shabby Makkan.

Shabby has been involved in football for the best part of twenty years. He told us, "I've worked with many talented young football players over the years, but Jamil has special qualities. I feel with his attitude and ability he has a bright future ahead of him."

"In my opinion though more players in our community need to be playing in mainstream grass leagues. And it does make the difference."

"Okay, clubs could do more but we should use the opportunities to to promote talent within the community."

Over the past two years the number of young Asian footballers at the club has increased from two to 40.

Shabby added, "The club's objective is to encourage young people to experience a wide range of sports, including football, at grass roots level.

"The doors here are open to children of all ages, social and cultural backgrounds, our emphasis is on participation and enjoyment."
