POLICE in Burnley were today investigating a mysterious attack on a man in his own home.

Detectives have been hunting three men who forced their way into his house and assaulted the 58-year-old man.

Police said the victim was asleep in bed when the thugs kicked down his front door in Lindsay Street and ran upstairs to the bedroom.

The victim, who has not been named, was pulled from his bed and brutally kicked in the head during the attack in the early hours of Saturday.

The gang then fled leaving the victim to call for help.

He was later taken to Burnley General Hospital and treated for his injuries, including cuts to his head and several broken teeth.

He was due to talk with detectives over the weekend in a bid to establish a motive for the vicious assault, as well as who the three attackers may have been.

But he was said to be too ill to speak to them and officers hoped to take a statement from him later today

Detective Sergeant Steve Mounsey, of Burnley CID, said: "This was a vicious assault on a man in his own home and we are keen to trace the offenders.

"The motive for the attack is at present a mystery."
