FORMER Burnley boss Stan Ternent will make an emotional return to Turf Moor for a testimonial match against Manchester United next week.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson agreed to the game, which will take place next Tuesday, earlier this summer in honour of his close friend.

The move was revealed just two days after the manager controversially left the Clarets after his contract was not renewed by the club after six years as manager.

The terms of Ternent's departure entitle him to a testimonial, with Ferguson's United the obvious choice.

Burnley FC chief executive Dave Edmundson said: "The testimonial was agreed when Stan's contract was not renewed and was originally going to be pre-season but will now take place next week.

"It should be a fitting end to Stan's career at Turf Moor."

Sir Alex and Stan are old pals and their close friendship resulted in Lee Roche and loan signings Luke Chadwick and Neil Wood all making the switch from Old Trafford to Turf Moor last season.

Defender David May, another former Old Trafford favourite, also joined the Clarets after first consulting Ferguson.

And despite United's busy summer schedule, which included three games in the United States in late July and the Community Shield against Arsenal, Ferguson was determined to fit in a testimonial.

The testimonial match has been welcomed by supporters' groups.
