AFTER 142 years of trying, Lowerhouse finally put some silverware in the trophy cabinet as they shook off the tag of being the only Lancashire League side never to have won an honour in dramatic style last night.

Lowerhouse lifted the Switch-to-Switch Worsley Cup following a dramatic six-wicket win over Haslingden at their packed Liverpool Road ground, where a crowd of almost 2,500 paid record final receipts of close to £5,000.

Lancashire Evening Telegraph man-of-the-match Chris Bleazard led the Burnley club to victory with a magnificent unbeaten century, repeating the feat he managed in the semi-finals and posting his second ton of the season against Haslingden.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," said Bleazard, whose 12th-boundary took him to his 100 and sealed Lowerhouse's victory with his 16-year-old nephew Ben Heap watching from the non-striker's end.

"The semi-final was great, but to do it under pressure here was just unbelievable. It hasn't really sunk in.

"We have always been the team that has never won anything. But they can't say that now.

"With the importance of winning something, this is the highlight of my career.

"All credit to everyone at the club who put so much work in. It has been a fantastic day."

Lowerhouse restricted Haslingden to 231 after the visitors had made a flying start through Barry Knowles, who hit a quick-fire 88 before being run-out backing up.

"I thought we had done a good job in pegging them back and I was quite pleased with that," said triumphant Lowerhouse captain Matt Hope.

"I was a bit worried at 70-3 but with Blez out there anything can happen. He is the best batsman in the league and it was fantastic for him, and for Charlie (Cottam), to do it."
