Old Loudmouth was back in action at this year's one-day spectacular.

And it seemed the rain on the day or the years have failed to dampen goalkeeper Mohammed Khan's winning spirit. With the help of a tight defence he kept eight clean sheets during the day as Whalley Range lifted the fifth annual Cancer Relief trophy spopnsored by the East Lancashire Partnership

A total of 69 sides took part this year in five different age-ranges on a day when it just wouldn't stop raining.

In the seniors section Santos, Rishton Diamonds, Blackburn Catering and Fishwick Rangers waltzed through the difficult group stages without even breaking sweat. Fourteen more teams followed them through to the second round.

In the second round Burnley's best hope Real Stoneyholme showed promise by quickly dispatching Asifs FC to book a place in the quarters. In a tense penalty shoot-out Koknis overcame AC Milham. Both sides were involved in what we can only call 'an ugly game'.

Blackburn Road and Bolton Asians both went down in the second round to Rishton and Whalley Range. And Santos quickly and efficiently dispatched Rochdale's Asia FC. A great header from a difficult cross the only goal of the game.

In the quarters a pin-point free-kick by 'Big Naveed Aslam' put out a Rishton side that went on to dominate the game but to no avail. Fishwick's defender turned keeper, Imran Adam got his side off to the best possible start in the penalty shoot-out against Whalley Range. But his team failed to take advantage and went out 4-3.

Santos's long reign of unbeaten games game to an end in the semis after a Whalley Range goal by Suleman Hafeji. Up until then the side had reached three consecutive finals in Blackburn and Preston and won all three.

Finalists Whalley Rangers (it was confusing for organisers at times) found themselves up against Blackburn Catering in the Semi's. A rare header from Farook Khan and some great 'defending' from Billy Upal saw them march on. The side started off slowly but by the second round were strolling to victories.

In the final Whalley Rangers failed to stamp their authority on the game and allowed big game player Ali to turn, shoot and score. Whalley Rangers familiar defensive substitution followed and with a backline of Abdul Rauf, Imran Akujy, Mustafa Sidik and Mohammed Khan Whalley Rangers never really posed a threat.

In the 16s and Under Seven Deadly Sins proved that teamwork can always overcome individual flair. OBC Deluxe looked the better side and more dominant but as the game went to penalties Seven Deadly Sins held their nerve to send their fans wild.

The 16s and under brought together the most vocal supporters of all the age-ranges with the quarter-finals consisting of teams from five different towns and cities.

The 13s and Under saw 10 teams compete for the cup on the adjacent mini-grass pitches. And it turned out to be a Rochdale and Preston final with Asia FC of Rochdale taking the honours with a 2-0 victory.

Deepdale La Coruna also won their final in the 11s and under with a similar scoreline beating Blackburn United in the process.

However, we have to save the best for last and the boys from Huncoat United and Blackburn Eagles. Huncoat won the 10s and under section 1-0 and did so with the youngest side in the tournament. The Juniors played in some pretty atrocious conditions at times and never complained a bit although the managers were always running for cover.
