TRAVELLING to Whalley recently after a country run in the car, I was approaching Calderstones when I noticed the services cemetery which was featured in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph a few months ago.
The gates were open. I turned around because I had always fancied a look around. I drove up the drive and saw some maintenance men cutting the grass.
I don't know who is responsible for looking after the cemetery but I think they should get the credit and recognition they deserve.
It is in beautiful condition and reminded me of the large services cemeteries on the continent.
There are saplings round the perimeter and cut grass that looks like a bowling green. The headstones are lovely and clean with the names and regimental badges and countries from two world wars (British, Canadians, Australians etc) carved on them.
