CAN G Woodburn, "Town will be magnet for rats" (LET, August 6) suggest how waste in the borough can be dealt with effectively?

A fortnightly collection scheme actually allows more of our waste to be collected than the old 'one bin for all' scheme.

We are all capable of producing less waste, by choosing groceries with less packaging for example, or by reusing and composting at home.

People needn't worry about moving their wheeled bins, as a simple call to the council can arrange for bins to be moved for those with difficulty.

Many people do not realise that collecting more rubbish will increase our council tax even more.

After all, it costs £33 per tonne of waste to be landfilled, and as a borough we send more than 63,000 tonnes to landfill per year.

The EU specifies how landfill tax and waste reduction targets increase each year. Should the targets not be met by Blackburn with Darwen Council, each tonne of waste over the target will incur severe fines. Are you willing to pay for that?

Perhaps the council could build an incinerator to destroy our waste, but then we'd only get people complaining about that too.
