A BUS made an unscheduled stop -- in the garden of a house -- when it was involved in a collision with a car.

Traffic police, fire fighters and three ambulance crews were called to the accident shortly before 2pm on Monday.

The 474 single decker bus was being driven toward Bury and had just passed the Red Hall Hotel when it and a Vauxhall Cavalier collided. The bus swerved and ploughed through a fence and a line of privets before coming to a halt just feet away from a bungalow.

The driver of the First Bus vehicle, a 41-year-old man from Rochdale, had to be helped from the damaged bus and was taken to Fairfield General Hospital for treatment to a sprained ankle.

The driver of the Vauxhall car, a 36-year-old man from Stubbins, sustained a suspected fractured arm.

A small number of passengers were on the bus when it crashed but none of them suffered any serious injuries.

Now, traffic police in Bury would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the accident. They can contact PC Derek Baird on 856 8073.
