PRESTON'S Armed Forces Careers Office has enlisted its first Asian recruit from a new course designed to get school leavers to sign up.
Imran Fennell was welcomed into the army yesterday (Wednesday) by Major Jimmy Hill at a special event in the Fishergate careers office.
The 16-year-old got a taste for military action during an Army Way of Life (AWOL) course he attended last year.
Working in partnership with the Education Business Partnership, army chiefs have run two five month AWOL courses in a bid to net new recruits.
But it is hoped Imran's appointment will pave the way for youngsters from ethnic minorities to come forward.
Imran, from Chorley, will start his training with the Army Training Regiment in Bassingbourn, near Cambridge, and hopes to become a certified Royal Logistics Corp Driver.
Sergeant Major Trevor Barrow, of Preston Armed Forces Careers Office, said: "We are delighted to welcome Imran and hope that this appointment will communicate to others in the community the army's drive to be an exciting and equal opportunities employer."
