ORGANISERS of a series of bike rides in Pendle are doing their bit for child health in the borough.

Families are being encouraged to get on their bikes for an easy-paced guided cycle ride on Saturday.

Highlighting one of the routes that are especially suitable for children, as well as adults looking to do more cycling, the organisers are hoping that many families will take part.

The latest ride starts at Seedhill Athletic Centre, Barrowford, at 11am. It follows the canal towpath to Towneley Park in Burnley for a refreshment break and then returns to Seedhill. It is being led by members of the CTC (Burnley and Pendle district). As with all the rides in the series, it is completely free, and riders can just turn up and join in.

Cyclists are encouraged to wear helmets, although they are not compulsory.

On Sunday, Colne Cycling Campaign members are leading a ride from Pendle Heritage Centre to Clarion House in Barley. This also starts at 11am. Mark Sandamas of Pennine Events, organisers of the Pendle and East Lancs Bike Fest, said: "Going on family cycle trips can be a very rewarding experience.

"Cycling can help increase a child's confidence and independence, and can establish good habits.

"With the increased concern over activity levels cycling remains one of the best forms of exercise for children - it is fun, offers them adventure and they can do it with their friends."

With free ice-cream for all children and friendly advice and help from experienced riders, the series of rides is proving popular, say organisers.
