CAMPAIGNING residents looked set to win their battle against a new road which would run through a Darwen beauty spot.
Council chiefs gave their support saying the road for lorries to carry landfill to Thorny Height Quarry should be refused.
Residents said it would cause too much noise and dust where the road would meet Belgrave Road. Developer David Knowles dismissed the complaints, saying it was a much better alternative to the current access by Bury Fold Road.
25 YEARS AGO
A 100-NAME petition was handed in against an extension on a factory which Knuzden residents feared was a health and fire hazard.
Cambridge Drive and Lyndhurst Avenue residents felt the storing of spray paints would give off fumes and could cause a fire. But John Haythornthwaite, production manager at Charles Baynes Ltd, said there was no danger.
50 YEARS AGO
A CHURCH'S future was questioned after its steeple began to lean. The steeple at Christ Church, Accrington needed to be repaired before winter to keep the church fit to stay open.
The church had already spent £4,000 on repairing dry rot.
