BURNLEY Ladies Inter-Town Bowling Team won the countywide league title for the first time in 27 years of trying.
The team were presented the award by Mayor of Burnley Councillor Les Harrison. In return they gave with their £50 winnings for the mayor's charity. Secretary Mavis Hancock said: "We are absolutely delighted to win the league after so many years of trying."

THE former butler at a 600-year-old home won £200 in compensation after being sacked for failing to collect enough logs to keep a fire burning. Miles Grundy, 44, had worked at Browsholme Hall, near Clitheroe, for 15 years before being sacked. The father-of-seven was forced to move out of the rent-free cottage in the grounds and into a smaller home in Clitheroe following the tribunal in Manchester.

BLACKBURN was hailed "the metropolis of Lancashire" at a meeting of Blackburn Chamber of Trade.
Chief regional officer of the central office of information Mr G Mould said that in the many years he had spent in the North West he had come to regard Blackburn as the only area which truly reflected the character of its people. He said neither Manchester nor Liverpool could ever be confused with Blackburn.
