SHOPS and businesses in Bury town centre faced severe disruption on Tuesday due to a blackout.

Around 60 premises were affected by a fault on an electricity high voltage network just before 9am.

A number of shops in Princess Parade were hit, as were other businesses located at one end of The Haymarket.

While some retail outlets opened despite the power supply interruption, others remained closed. A team of workmen from United Utilities carried out repairs in Murray Road.

A spokeswoman for electricity suppliers United Utilities said: "Around 60 customers were affected by a fault on the high voltage network.

"Forty of them were back on at midday and the remainder around 2pm. We brought in a generator to get customers back on supply while engineers worked to carry out the repair on an underground high voltage cable."

The company apologised for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience.
