MARK Bowen is determined to play his part in replenishing Blackburn Rovers' trophy cabinet.

Rovers' new assistant manager remembers well how Mark Hughes lifted the Worthington Cup with Rovers in his homeland a little over two years ago.

Bowen hailed Ewood chief Hughes "a winner". And, together, they are eager to stop the top Premiership sides' monopoly on trophies.

"It's an old cliche but there are only three things you can win every year," the former Norwich and Charlton defender said.

"It seems to me that, year after year, the big clubs are getting the best ones but we've come here to develop the football club further.

"Hopefully the end result is to win things and to progress the club up the league."

And the 40-year-old is eager to get to work.

"It's a massive job for any coach or manager because it's such a well established and respected club," Bowen said.

"It's not really for me to say what the strengths and weakness are at the moment because I haven't worked with the players.

"You want to come into the club and have a good look at things.

"Mark will stamp his authority on the way that he wants the team to play. That's my job as well.

"All I can say is that, when you look at it on paper, there is a whole bunch of talented players to work with and any coach coming in to work with players like that, can only expect a good future."
