Cool trucker Earl Dawson realised his ambition to be named Lorry Driver of the Year 1994.

Mr Dawson, 38, a driver for Barnoldswick-based Silentnight Beds, beat more than 2,000 colleagues to clinch the national title.

He romped to victory by incurring just 65 penalty points - 47 less than second place - in an oversized obstacle course.

BLACKBURN magistrates appointed their first Asian immigrant to the bench.

Indian Mohamed Tantwaia, 53, of Preston New Road, Blackburn, had lived in the area for 17 years and was well known for helping with community relations.

Mr Tantwaia, a housing liaison officer from Blackburn Council, was said to be "surprised and delighted."

HASLINGDEN twins Joan and Glenys Dean married at the same time in King Street Methodist Church, Blackburn.

Glenys married Clarence Sanderson, of Whalley Road, Mellor Brook. The pair met as students at Blackburn Bakery School. Jean also married a confectioner, Harry Whittle, of Worsley Street, Oswaldtwistle.

The twins wore similar dresses and shared five bridesmaids.
