A PRESTWICH couple had a turbulent start to married life when they were caught up in a hurricane while on honeymoon in America.

Newly-weds Simon and Amanda Tury flew to New York and Florida two weeks ago after tying the knot at Prestwich Hebrew Congregation.

After checking the Internet for weather reports after Hurricane Charley hit the West Coast, the couple thought they were safe to go ahead with their honeymoon plans, unaware that hurricanes Francis and Ivan were just around the corner.

While staying in Naples, West Florida, Simon and Amanda experienced a taste of Francis and were confined to their hotel for a day.

Amanda (26), who works for Manchester Jewish Federation, said: "We just got the outer rim of it and had to stay in our hotel room. We weren't allowed to open the windows because of the air pressure and outside it was quite stormy, with thunder and lightning. The rain was pouring down, but it didn't spoil our honeymoon, we just stayed in and watched videos."

On the day the couple left Naples to travel to Miami, the town was asked to carry out a voluntary evacuation.

Amanda added: "The Americans are very frightened of the hurricanes, more so than us as we were in our own little world!

"Ivan was approaching, but it missed us, in fact the hurricanes seemed to be chasing us. We were more scared about flying to Miami on the anniversary of 9/11."

The couple are now back safe and well in Prestwich, after flying back Wednesday morning (Sept 15), where they have set up home off Bury New Road.
