A TRAIL-BLAZING "reverse e-auction" has cut more than £20,000 from the cost of paper for local authorities in East Lancashire.

The event, hosted by the East Lancashire e-Partnership, was held at the Nelson offices of Pendle Borough Council, and witnessed by officers from Ellesmere Port, Crewe, and Nantwich Councils, who are considering a similar approach to procurement.

The one-hour auction attracted fierce competition from companies across the country and the final figure of around £56,000 resulted in a 28 per cent saving on a year's supply of A4 and A3 paper for East Lancashire's five borough councils. The opening bid was set at £79,000 and local and national companies were invited to vie for the business by undercutting each other in a live auction via the internet.
