BLACKPOOL'S historic Lido Pool could be demolished and replaced by a car park, it emerged this week.

The Lytham Road pool, built in the 1930s is due to close later this year when the new £6m Palatine Leisure Centre opens.

Owner, Blackpool Council, has now applied for permission to demolish the pool and fence off the site for use as car parking.

A council spokesman said: "We are currently considering the best way forward for the future of Lido Pool, as final preparations are being made on the new state-of-the-art Palatine Centre around the corner.

"One option is to demolish the building and provide much improved parking facilities for the South Shore area, where there is currently a lack of off-street parking spaces.

"The decision, however, is subject to full consultation as part of the planning process and members of the public are encouraged to submit their letters of support or opposition to the Town Hall.

"It's important to stress that the row of shops adjacent to Lido Pool will not be affected, and should there be a new car park it will serve these local business well."
