THE Bishop of Blackburn, the Right Reverend Nicholas Reade, is expected to send a letter of thanks this week to the Lancashire Council of Mosques for its help in trying to secure the release of Kenneth Bigley.

A message will also be sent to the parish priest in Liverpool who has been working with the family of the murdered British hostage, who was killed on Friday after being held captive in Iraq for three weeks.

The move, led by the Bishop of Blackburn, received unanimous support from members of the Blackburn Diocesan Synod which met on Saturday.

A letter from the Synod, representing all the Church of England parishes across Lancashire, will be sent to Ibrahim Master, chairman of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, to acknowledge the support given by the Muslim community.

The Bishop said: "It will express the care of the Church of England for all in the wider community and thank Mr Master and the Muslim community for supporting the efforts to secure Mr Bigley's release."

Supporting the Bishop's proposal, the Bishop of Burnley, the Right Reverend John Goddard, said the letters would show solidarity with both other Christian and other faith communities.
