THE fire service was flooded with calls on Wednesday after a mystery explosion sparked a major alert.
A loud bang was heard as far afield as Farnworth, Bury, Chorlton, Swinton, Worsley and Eccles but the emergency services did not know what the bang was.
Police patrol cars and the police helicopter were dispatched to look for the explosion, which happened around 8am.
No fire crews were called out but hundreds of calls were made to the service about the bang.
