LOST WAGES: Security guard George Glover was attacked, gagged and bound and £800 in wages stolen from him while he was on duty at the Stubbins firm of Scapa Porrit Ltd. Mr Glover was found three hours later by another employee of the firm. The money was due to be paid out to night workers.

TERRACE TERROR: Heavy fines totalling £860 were imposed on 14 football fans by Bury magistrates for offences arising out of Bury FC's League Cup quarter-final match with Nottingham Forest at Gigg Lane. Despite the violence, which flared periodically on the terraces, the vast majority of the 21,500 supporters from both clubs were praised by police.

The Nottingham fans' good nature was displayed in a town centre pub when the fans had a whip round after part-time cleaner at the George Hotel in Market Street, Mrs Clara Halliday, had her purse stolen. It contained £6 and a ticket for the game. Fans collected £7 for her and she was allowed to pay her way into the ticket only match. Bury lost by 3 goals to nil.
