WYRE councillors are going back to school!

Members of the authority will be juggling vital council duties with informing the voters of the future on 'Take Your Councillor to School Day,' as part of Local Democracy Week.

A number of councillors of all political persuasions will join members of the Wyre Youth Council to class.

The 'Take Your Councillor to School Day' is aimed at helping councillors find out where the interests of the borough's young people lies.

Members of the youth council will also be able to put pressing questions to the borough's leaders at a young people's question time on Wednesday.

Other events include a visit to Poulton Civic Centre by members of the Wyre Disability Forum and Wyre Multi-Cultural Forum.

Members of the two groups will meet the Mayor of Wyre, Cllr Maurice Richardson, who will talk to them about local government and give them an insight into how the council works.

Cllr Richardson will also host members of Thornton Cleveleys Air Training Corps on Thursday.

Throughout the week, information on who Wyre councillors are, what they do and how they make decisions will be on show in a display at the Civic Centre.

Wyre Borough Council leader, Cllr Alan Vincent, said: "Local government affects everyone, including young people. Yet national research has shown that half of young people believe their council has no direct control or relevance to their lives, and only two per cent think that their council has any power.

"That's why events like those we've arranged for Local Democracy Week are so important. We want to help people of all ages understand how their local council works and get them involved in the democratic process."
