A YORKSHIRE terrier narrowly avoided becoming a hot dog after being saved from a blazing car.

Ponti the pooch was left in the parked car in Accrington town centre when smoke started streaming from under the bonnet.

Firefighters smashed a window with an axe to free Ponti to the cheers of a large crowd of shoppers which had gathered around to watch the drama unfold.

A PADDLING pony sparked a rescue operation after going for a midnight dip in a canal and getting stuck.

Bobby the pony dipped his hooves into the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which ran alongside his paddock in West End, Oswaldtwistle, but once in found he could not get out.

Luckily he was spotted by a passer-by who called Accrington ambulance.

Owner Debbie Martland, 13, of Wordsworth Close, Oswaldtwistle, said Bobby was probably testing out the flu injection he had recently been given!

A CLITHEROE bus driver who tried to drive home after drinking said he had driven the equivalent of 23 times round the world without an accident.

But Blackburn magistrates found him guilty of drink driving, banned him from driving for a year and fined him £5.
