A SOCIAL group for people with mental and physical disabilities is to close after 33 years.

The Longfield Companions has held meetings for its members every month at the Longfield Suite in Prestwich.

But when they meet on Wednesday, December 8 for the annual Christmas party, it will be for the last time.

Treasurer of the Longfield Companions, Mr James Donnelly, said the sad decision had been taken by the committee due to ill health and personal reasons.

He said: "My wife Winifred used to be the chairman but she died two years ago. Her position was filled temporarily, but I have heart trouble and other committee members have ill health or cannot carry on. It is a shame to let the group fold, and I feel guilty about it, but there is nothing we can do."

Mr Donnelly (64) became involved with the group around 20 years ago after his wife joined. He started off as a driver then joined the committee.

He said the club could still be saved if new blood could be brought in to form a new committee.

No experience is necessary but the full five-strong committee would need to be found.

Mr Donnelly, of Chadderton Drive, Unsworth, said: "It is very rewarding, I really enjoy it. When you see the members' faces it is all worthwhile, and when they get up on the dance floor they really enjoy themselves."

Over the last five years, numbers have dropped from 100 to 57 but the group is still very popular.

Each month members are transported from throughout the borough to the Longfield Suite for an evening of entertainment and refreshments.

Members have been informed of the decision by letter and Mr Donnelly thanked everyone who had helped over the years.

Anyone who thinks they could help save the group should contact Mr Donnelly on 0161 796 8254.
