SUPER head Iain Hulland has been given a double Commons congratulation for winning one of the profession's top awards.

After the 55-year-old won the Promethean Award for Headteacher of the Year at the 2004 National teaching Awards, his local MP Janet Anderson put down a Parliamentary Motion praising his achievement and invited him to Westminster with his wife, Christine.

Mr Hulland, head of Alder Grange Community and Technology School in Rawtenstall, who lives in Read, was presented with the trophy this week after beating thousands of other secondary heads to the coveted title.

Rossendale and Darwen Labour backbencher Mrs Anderson put down an Early Day Motion congratulating him, and gave him a champagne lunch in the Commons' prestigious Strangers Dining Room.

The EDM on the Commons Order Paper, Parliament's daily agenda sent to all MPs, ministers and senior civil servants, was also signed by Hyndburn's Greg Pope, Pendle's Gordon Prentice and three other North West MPs.

It reads: "We recognise that the Teaching Awards are the Oscars of the teaching profession, which aim to celebrate excellence and promote best practice in education.

"And we congratulate Iain on his magnificent achievement and wish him, and everyone at Alder Grange Community and Technology School, well for the future."

Mrs Anderson said: "I am delighted at Iain's award which recognises all the work he, his predecessors and his staff have done to make Alder Grange a magnificent school.

"It is an honour and a privilege to have him as one of my heads in Rossendale. The award is well deserved."

Mr Hulland said: "I was very pleased and surprised at the award which recognises the work we have all done. To get an EDM in the Commons and be invited to lunch is the icing on the cake."
