ACCRINGTON Stanley manager John Coleman believes the imminent departure of Lutel James is the best solution for the striker and the club.

James, who has been with the club since the summer of 2001, agreed to go on the transfer list after failing to force his way back into the starting line-up.

The 4-5-1 formation which Stanley have operated for most of the season has made it difficult for James to hold down a regular first team place.

And Coleman hoped supporters would understand both his and the forward's reasons for what looks set to be an imminent parting of the ways.

"We have got to do what's the best for the club and Lutel," he said.

"Lutel loves playing football and when he's not, he's not happy.

"When you've got players who aren't happy at the club it's difficult to change that unless you play them.

"He's probably no different from myself really when I was a player. I always wanted to play and you know when you're not playing you can't score goals and, as a striker, that's what you thrive on. I'm sure Lutel's no different in that.

"It's not about personalities, I get on great with Lutel, and very much his personality mirrors mine as a player.

"But I have to look forward, I can't look back because it's all about what we're going to do in the future."

He added: "If there's backlash (from the fans) I think they have to appreciate I'm only doing what's best for Accrington and that will always be the case.

"Everywhere I've been I've always tried to do my best."

James has his pick of at least six new clubs, with Conference sides Scarborough and Leigh RMI both contacting the 32-year-old this week. Conference North clubs Droylsden, Altrincham, Runcorn and Stalybridge Celtic have also made enquiries about the former Bury front man.

Meanwhile, new players are on the agenda for Stanley boss Coleman.

The Reds chief has made enquiries about two unidentified targets - one an experienced campaigner - as he bids to make his squad even stronger for a promotion assault.

The likely departure of James has also, arguably, forced Coleman's hand on delving into the transfer market.

However, Coleman is not confident of securing any signatures before Saturday's FA Cup showdown with Leigh RMI.

"I know we've got a good team but I'm still looking to add to it," he said.

"I've identified a couple of players I want but getting them's a different thing.

"It's looking unlikely that I'll get them before the weekend at the moment."
