The Simon Garner column

IT doesn't matter who plays up front for Blackburn Rovers - because at the moment they're not getting the chances to score anyway.

It's unfortunate that all the forwards are going through bad spells at the moment but it's hard to see how they're going to get the goals to boost their confidence.

As a striker you would hope to get three or four chances every game and one of them should go in, but at Chelsea on Saturday I couldn't see where a goal was coming from.

So it's difficult to assess who is the best front two for Blackburn.

Dickov and Djorkaeff are getting the nod at the moment and I think Mark Hughes has gone for them because of their experience, which is what the team needs in its current plight.

But I do think Jonathan Stead is still the man to score the goals even though he will find it tough.

Last season he was an unknown force and defenders didn't know anything about him but now they have taken notice, but I still think he's good enough.

It would take a lot of weight off the young striker's shoulders if he played up front with Dickov, who puts himself about a bit.

He can take defenders away and create chances, which would allow Stead to be the main target man, a role I still think he's the most likely of the club's forward to thrive in.

Matt Jansen is another option but this is difficult because it's all about him trying to get his confidence.

If he goes into a struggling side that isn't going to create chances then it might be shattered altogether.

At the moment, he would be more effective coming off the bench, the way he did against Portsmouth when he scored Blackburn's only winning goal so far this season.

Over all though, the strikers are lucky because they have Mark Hughes, who used to be one himself and will know what they are going through.

But it won't need a Hughes-style spectacular goal to break the duck, because it doesn't matter if one goes in off somebody's backside.

It's nice to win without the strikers scoring, but sometimes you need the strikers to score in order to win because that's what they are paid for.

So the sooner they get their touch back the better.

Still, it's far too early for the players to be taking notice of the table because that doesn't do anybody's confidence any good.

Blackburn might be bottom, but there's no way any of the players will be looking at that and thinking, "Oh my God, we're going down!"
