May, 34, makes his debut at Nantwich Town today after being lured out of retirement by Borough boss Brent Peters.

The ex-Manchester United defender, who was a member of the Reds' historic treble winning squad of 1999 and won two Premiership winning medals while at Old Trafford, has been out of action since spending last season at Burnley.

May has initially signed a short term deal that enables him to play at Nantwich today and makes him eligible for Borough's defence of the League Challenge Cup against either Oldham Town or Leek CSOB next weekend.

But cock-a-hoop Peters revealed he is hopeful of persuading the ex-Blackburn Rovers stopper of signing a more permanent deal.

He said: "I first spoke to David about playing for us a few weeks ago, but he was quite adamant he was retiring.

"I told him it's a long life when you are out of the game and I knew he could enhance a team here full of quality players.

"Earlier this week, we picked up an untimely injury to one of my defenders, Ian Hughes, and that prompted me to give David another call.

"We had a good chat and I was delighted when he finally agreed to come down to the club and sign a short-term deal.

"He will play at Nantwich today and can play in the cup next week, then I hope we can sit down and discuss a longer deal."

Peters, whose side currently lie second in the North West Counties League Division One, added: "David is still a fit lad and it's all about match fitness, but at this level it should be like smoking a Hamlet to him!"
