A TEENAGER who risked his life to save a youngster from drowning is to be honoured for his bravery.

Ben Keen (13) has been awarded a Testimonial on Vellum by the Royal Humane Society following the rescue of a six-year-old boy who had slipped into the fast-flowing River Irwell at Burrs Country Park, Bury, in July.

The boy was swept along the river and disappeared beneath the water and would have died if it had not been for Ben's actions.

Ben, who was with friends, jumped into the river and swam out towards the boy. He dived beneath the swirling water twice to find him, and dragged him back to the side. The boy was conscious and was taken away by an unknown woman.

Shortly after the rescue, Ben, who lives off Bury and Bolton Road, Radcliffe, told the Bury Times: "I only did what anyone else would have done."

Now, in addition to the rescue award to be presented to Ben next year at a special ceremony at Bury Town Hall, the youngster has also won the praise of Major General David Pennefather, secretary of the Royal Humane Society.

Speaking at the society's London headquarters, he said: "Ben acted swiftly and bravely and there is little doubt he saved this boy's life.

"Without a thought for his own safety, he waded into the fast-flowing six foot deep, 20-yard wide river, and then dived under the water to bring this boy to safety. Ben's family must be very proud, and he thoroughly deserves this award."
